Banco dos Brics: Dilma and Lula discuss the name of Alckmin – 09/03/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

Former president Dilma Rousseff (PT), who was reluctant to assume the presidency of the Brics bank, the bloc formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, will respond directly to President Lula (PT) about her management in the institution —and not the Ministry of Finance, now headed by Fernando Haddad, as happened with her predecessors.

Her status as a former president, as well as her personal proximity to Lula, made the situation natural. And it was one of the premises for her to accept the mission.

Dilma also spoke with Lula about the need to have, in the bank’s structure, representatives from Brazil aligned with her vision of the Brazilian economy and also of international relations.

A few days ago, she, Lula and Haddad discussed names that should be indicated to the board of governors, which has representatives from the countries that make up the bloc, and to the board of directors of the bank.

Vice-president Geraldo Alckmin, who is also Minister of Industry and Commerce, will be invited to represent Brazil on the council of governors as a sort of substitute for Fernando Haddad —who, as head of the Treasury, is part of the collegiate.

Another name that was quoted for one of the representation positions was that of Minister Esther Dweck, of Management and Innovation, but there is still no definition about the other nominees besides Geraldo Alckmin.
