The ninth death caused by dengue in Bahia was confirmed by the state Health Department, which has 122 municipalities in a state of epidemic. In addition, another 51 are at risk and 34 on alert.

The victim lived in Vitória da Conquista and was the second person to die from the disease in the southwestern city of Bahia this year.

The other deaths occurred in Jacaraci (two), Piripá, Irecê, Feira de Santana, Barra do Choça and Ibiassucê.

According to the Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate, the state confirmed 29,982 cases of the disease as of March 2, an increase of 209.3% compared to the same period last year.

The epidemic is fought in Bahia with measures such as vaccination, use of drones to locate outbreaks of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, increased smoking, cleaning efforts in cities with a high rate of infection, use of backpack pumps by health agents, distribution of 12 thousand kits for agents to combat endemic diseases and strengthen state pharmaceutical assistance stocks.

The Secretary of Health, Roberta Santana, demands that city halls intensify urban cleaning actions to eliminate breeding sites. She also defends the mobilization of society in the fight against the disease.

“Excessive dependence on tobacco, as a last resort, may reveal reactive rather than proactive management in combating the disease,” he said.

The state government shared price registration minutes with the municipalities so that they can purchase medicines, supplies (such as serum) and backpack pumps.
