Automakers provide ethanol vehicles to G20 authorities – 02/26/2024 – Panel SA

Three automakers donated 80 vehicles to foreign authorities who have been participating, since last week, in the G20 meetings in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The initiative is a partnership with Unica (Sugarcane and Biofuels Industry Union), which promotes ethanol technology.

Hybrid cars from Hyundai, Stellantis and Toyota are plastered with signs that highlight the use of Brazilian ethanol. The motto of the G20 meeting is “building a just world and a sustainable planet”.

This movement takes place at a time when the STF (Supreme Federal Court) is questioning Renovabio, a federal program to encourage biofuels, especially ethanol, as a way of compensating for pollutant emissions.

Among the points under discussion in the direct action of unconstitutionality (ADI) filed by the Democratic Renewal Party are the commercialization of Cbios —carbon credits purchased to compensate for the sale of polluting fuels, such as diesel and gasoline—, the decarbonization policy of distributors and a supposed increase of R$0.12 in the final price of pumps at gas stations.

In addition to the sugarcane industry and the three automakers that provided the vehicles, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is part of the movement.
