Attacks intensified coexistence of the Powers, says Rosa – 02/08/2023 – Politics

A month after the coup attacks by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), the president of the STF (Federal Supreme Court), Rosa Weber, said this Wednesday (8) that democracy has not been weakened and that harmonious coexistence between the Powers was intensified.

Rosa spoke briefly about the episode at the opening of this Wednesday’s session, in the court’s plenary, which was restored after the depredation.

According to her, the date of the “criminal invasion” of the seat of the Supreme Court “will always be remembered so that it never happens again”.

“It is necessary to reiterate that the vilification of the installations of the three pillars of democracy —the National Congress, the Planalto Palace and this Supreme Court—, far from weakening our constitutional democracy, came to confer, thanks to the immediate solidarity of all, greater intensity to the necessarily harmonious coexistence —requirement of the constitutional text itself— between the Powers that make up the Brazilian State”, said the minister.

According to Rosa, the continuity of the institutional work of the court, in the same plenary that was destroyed, “is the fundamental response that was imposed without any hesitation to acts of violence against democratic institutions”.

“And this answer is being given”, added the president of the STF.

After Rosa’s speech, the Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, asked for the floor and listed the complaints and statements made by the agency regarding the case. He also said that the PGR, which has always been seen as inert, acted and has been acting in a preventive way to problems like those of January 8.

The plenary of the STF was reopened on the 1st, when the court opened the work of the 2023 Judiciary.

On the occasion, Rosa made a speech with messages to the coup leaders who destroyed the headquarters of the three Powers, whom he called “enemies of freedom”, promised to hold everyone accountable and said that democracy “remains unshakable”.

Rosa left themes that question the power of the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office for this semester when he resumes activities.

The president of the court, who has a discreet profile and prefers that the STF not be the focus of attention due to controversies, left out topics that could cause anger against the court.
