Arrested and convicted of planning the bomb attack on a fuel truck near Brasília airport, George Washington de Oliveira Sousa entered the National Congress in November last year with authorization from the office of Senator Zequinha Marinho (Podemos-PA).

George Washington, 24 days before the attempted attack in Brasília, accompanied a public hearing in the Senate, promoted by Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE), with attacks on the electoral system and calls for a military coup.

The name of the senator who released the entry is kept confidential by the Federal Senate, but was obtained by Sheet by people with access to information. Questioned, the Senate alleged that the disclosure represented “risk of violation of the prerogative of secrecy of the source”.

The senator’s advisory also highlighted the security procedures adopted by the Federal Senate and said that the convict only entered the building after registering at the entrance and passing through the metal detector.

“Only after complying with this Federal Senate procedure is that [os cidadãos] were released to access the Commission’s plenary,” said Marinho’s office.

“There is no relationship between the senator and the three mentioned [George Washington e outros dois acusados de participação no atentado frustrado]. We emphasize that the only motivation for granting access was to allow citizens of Pará to participate in a hearing that was public. It is even valid to say that of these three, only one was released by the cabinet.”

Despite the security protocol, legislative police suspect that some of the vandals who invaded the Three Powers on January 8 accompanied the public hearing and took advantage of the entrance to the Senate to map some points of the building.

It drew the attention of the Legislative Police that some aggressors came prepared to climb the Congress and seemed to know, for example, where the fire hydrants were — turned on to contain the effect of the tear gas bombs.

The public hearing was organized by Girão at the Transparency, Inspection and Control Commission to discuss the advertising time of candidates in the elections, which had been contested, without evidence, by the campaign of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

During the hearing, Bolsonarist parliamentarians, lawyers and activists attacked the electoral process and the STF (Federal Supreme Court), asked for the arrest or impeachment of Minister Alexandre de Moraes and even advocated a military coup.

The other two accused of participating in the failed bomb episode, Alan Diego dos Santos Rodrigues and Wellington Macedo de Souza, were also on the Senate committee that day.

Girão denies that his office was responsible for the entry of the trio. According to reports made to SheetAlan and Wellington were released by the committee itself, which lasted more than 11 hours and was attended not only by senators, but also by federal deputies.

When contacted, Girão stated that “a significant number of people participated, including guests and non-invited”. He said that around 40 parliamentarians, including senators and federal deputies, took the floor.

“On the day of the public hearing, I was presiding over the session and, as a result, totally focused on its best progress, without having acted in the sense of releasing the entry of these people into the commission”, he declared in a note.

George and Alan were convicted of endangering the life, physical integrity or property of another by placing dynamite or a substance with similar effects, in addition to causing a combustible or flammable fire.

George was also convicted of illegally carrying a firearm and an explosive or incendiary device. George and Alan are in jail, while Wellington is at large.

According to the Public Ministry of the Federal District, the three met in the camp set up in front of the Army Headquarters, in Brasília.

Their objective, according to investigations, was to commit a crime that could cause social commotion and instigate a military coup. George Washington left Pará on November 12 with guns, ammunition and dynamite. On December 23, the group worked out the next day’s plan.

George Washington assembled the bomb; Alan Diego placed the artifact under the fuel truck; and Wellington Macedo took Alan Diego to Brasília airport.

The explosion ended up frustrated because the truck driver became suspicious and called the police. The vehicle was loaded with aviation kerosene and had a capacity of 60,000 liters.
