Athlete Luca Kumahara is authorized to compete in men’s table tennis – News of Brazil

The Brazilian Luca Kumahara received approval from the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) to start participating in men’s competitions. This Tuesday (8), the entity’s decision was communicated to the Brazilian Table Tennis Confederation (CBTM), which had requested the change.
The request was made last year, after the athlete informed CBTM that he had started the gender transition process, starting by adopting Luca as his new social name, in international tournaments, still as a member of the Brazilian women’s table tennis team.
Because it is an unprecedented case of gender transition in the modality worldwide, the international entity had to set up a working group to analyze the topic. The study supported the decision announced today.
“At the ITTF, we understand that this transition is a significant step in your journey and we want to assure you that the Federation supports your choices and decisions. We are committed to creating an environment that promotes inclusion and respects individual identities.”said Raul Callin, general secretary of the ITTF, in a message of support for Kumahara.
The 28-year-old table tennis player from São Paulo, who has participated in women’s competitions at the London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, will have previous results maintained in his history on the ITTF website.
From now on, CBTM will make the official request for Kumahara’s inclusion in men’s competitions, in a special form. After the bureaucratic procedures, the Brazilian will be able to play men’s competitions around the world.
