Washington (USA) – Presidents Lula and Joe Biden meet, this Friday (10), in the Oval Office of the White House, in Washington. In the first meeting, after the PT took office, the two heads of the Executive defended democracy and environmental preservation.

“You know that Brazil has been marginalizing itself for four years. A president who did not like to maintain relations with any country. His world continued and began with fake news, morning, afternoon and night,” Lula told Biden, referring to Jair Bolsonaro. Biden laughed and said the theme was a familiar one after Lula said Bolsonaro “belittled international relations.”

The Brazilian president divided his opening speech into three “problems” that will require joint action by the two countries: the climate issue, the fight against inequality and never again allowing the repetition of a Capitol in the USA or the 8th of January in Brazil. In 2021, the US Congress was invaded by Trumpists. Two years later, the headquarters of the Three Powers were invaded in Brazil by Bolsonarists.

Lula reaffirmed the Brazilian commitment to zero deforestation by 2030 and returned to attack the Bolsonaro government.

“In recent years, the Amazon has been invaded by political irrationality, human irrationality. We had a president who ordered deforestation, ordered mining to enter indigenous areas, ordered mining in the reserves that we demarcated in the Amazon. I made the commitment that by 2030 we will reach zero deforestation,” Lula told Biden.

When addressing social inequality, Lula said that black youth are victims of the State.

“In the United States and Brazil, especially young black people from the periphery are often victims of the State’s incapacity. In my opinion, this in the periphery is the absence of the State with public policies to guarantee dreams to the youth”.

Biden said it was an “honor” to welcome Lula back to the White House. The American president said that Brazil and the United States are “strong democracies” and that they were “severely tested”, but that “prevailed”.

Biden recalled the telephone conversation he had with Lula after the January 8 attacks and expressed “unconditional support from the US for Brazilian democracy and respect for the free will of the Brazilian people”. He declared that the US and Brazil need to “stand together, reject political violence and value democratic institutions”.

“The rule of law, freedom and equality are core values ​​that we both cherish. Our shared values, and the strong ties between our peoples, make Brazil and the US on the same page, especially in tackling climate change,” said Biden.
