President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) demanded this Thursday (22) the rich countries for a “historic debt” with the preservation of the environment. Lula spoke mainly about the Amazon during the “Power Our Planet” event in Paris. “In fact, those who polluted the planet in the last 200 years were those who made the industrial revolution and, therefore, have to pay the historic debt they owe to planet Earth”, he said.
The representative invited the festival’s audience to travel to Brazil to attend the United Nations climate conference, COP 30, in Belém (PA), in 2025. “In 2025, we will hold the COP 30 in an Amazonian state so that all of you have the opportunity to get to know the Amazon ecosystem up close, the richness of biodiversity, the richness of our rivers”, he said.
“And that they can share with the Brazilian people the preservation of our forests and make rich countries responsible for financing developing countries that have forest reserves, because it was not the African people who polluted the world, it is not the Latin American people who polluted the world,” he added.
Lula pointed out that when he took office, he signed a commitment to end deforestation in the Amazon by 2030. “We are going to be very tough against anyone and everyone who wants to cut down a tree to plant soybeans, corn or raise cattle,” said the president. “The Amazon is a sovereign territory of Brazil, but at the same time it belongs to all of humanity. And, therefore, we will make every effort to keep the forest standing”, he reinforced.
