The Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro approved this Tuesday (9) a bill that obliges bars and restaurants in the state to offer printed menus to customers.

The text prohibits the menu from being available only via QR code. Popularized during the Covid pandemic, this digital version can still be offered by establishments, as long as they also have the printed option.

The measure still depends on the approval of Governor Cláudio Castro (PL), who has up to 15 working days to sanction or veto the proposal. In the event of a green light, the standard will apply to all places that sell drinks, meals or snacks in the state, including hotels and motels.

Author of the project, deputy Rodrigo Amorim (PTB), argued that the end of the restriction measures against Covid-19 already makes it possible to make the printed menu available.

“Some establishments still use the digital menu exclusively to reduce costs. This has created constraints and inconvenience for elderly people and other citizens who do not have a cell phone at the time of the meal or even depend on the internet connection, often not even provided by the establishment “, he stated.

Sought after, SindRio (Union of Bars and Restaurants of Rio de Janeiro) did not manifest itself until the publication of the report.

UFRJ health management researcher Chrystina Barros says that despite the improvement in the health situation, there are other contagious diseases besides Covid.

Therefore, she claims that the ideal is to sanitize all shared objects, such as menus. “It’s important to remember hygiene habits and keep in mind that in these establishments, people can put their hand over their mouth for some reason and then grab the menu,” she said.

“In fact, we need to provide accessibility. But if there is an option, digital is safer, but remembering that if you share your cell phone, you also lose that security. It is the great challenge of health: reconciling and weighing risks, biology, behavior and knowledge”, he added.
