Manaus (AM) – The Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam) unanimously approved on Wednesday (23) Bill No. 533/2023, authored by state deputy Wanderley Monteiro (Avante). The Bill, with its unanimous approval, represents a milestone in promoting the inclusion and appreciation of Paralympic athletes in the state of Amazonas. The law awaits the governor’s signature to take effect.
The main point of the law is the establishment of the “State Paralympic Athlete Week”, to be celebrated annually from the 16th to the 22nd of September. This week of celebration will be in line with the “State and National Day of Paralympic Athletes”, as determined by Law n° 12.622/2012 and enacted Law n° 241/2015, which address the issue of people with disabilities in Amazonas.
The “State Paralympic Athlete Week” aims to promote the social inclusion of people with disabilities through sport. According to the approved law, during this week, both public and private entities will be involved in holding events that aim to enhance the achievements and fundamental role of Paralympic athletes in society. In addition, these events will focus on publicizing and raising awareness of the importance of practicing sports for the social inclusion and professionalization of people with disabilities.
Satisfied with the approval of the project, Monteiro highlighted the relevance of the law and its potential contribution to raising awareness about the importance of Paralympic athletes: “I am extremely happy with the approval of this law, which is so important for our Paralympic athletes. The ‘State Paralympic Athlete Week’ will be an opportunity for us to recognize the achievements of these athletes and to promote social inclusion and respect for diversity in our state.”
With approval by the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas, Bill N°533/2023 is now awaiting the signature of the governor, marking a significant step towards valuing Paralympic athletes and raising awareness of their contributions to Amazonian society.
