The artists furnished the space as if it were any other home. Using the mall’s own electricity, they installed a TV, video game console, microwave and other appliances. They also built a concrete wall at the site. ‘Secret Mall Apartment’ Disclosure They only left home when they were discovered by the mall’s security team, who destroyed the apartment. The case ended up making the news at the time and is now narrated in detail, with archive images of the stay. There are also interviews with former residents. “The story is a kind of Trojan horse, where you expect one thing and constantly subvert your preconceptions as you watch it,” Workman told Variety magazine’s website. “You hear the premise and think, ‘Oh, this is going to be like one of those crazy prank movies.’ But he’s using it to explore deeper ideas about art and what it means, as well as gentrification and how we live in the shadows of these corporations.” Produced by Jesse Eisenberg, the film goes beyond history and also brings discussions about gentrification, artistic purpose and capitalism.
