Artificial intelligence to be used to analyze 8/1 footage

A request from Senator Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF) should enable artificial intelligence resources or the work of specialists in the field to analyze the images captured by security cameras at the National Congress, Planalto Palace, Federal Supreme Court, Itamaraty Palace and of the Palace of Justice registered between the 7th and 9th of January of this year.

The request presented at the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) on January 8 does not provide further details but, in theory, current technology allows the use of identification and facial recognition tools. This would help to individualize the conduct of each filmed protester. The investigation may even facilitate the identification of possible infiltrators in the demonstration. But it is still not clear whether the quality of the captured images allows the use of this type of technology.

Approval of the application is part of a victory for the CPMI opposition that took place on Tuesday (11). In anticipation of the government trying to interrogate Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, former assistant to former President Jair Bolsonaro, a series of requests to access confidential information were approved. They had previously been barred from the first meetings by government supporters.

By means of an agreement, the plenary accepted, in a symbolic vote, requests that aim to obtain information from public bodies linked to the government capable of proving the thesis defended by the leniency opponents and even the complicity of federal authorities with the acts of vandalism that occurred. at Praça dos Três Poderes.

Among the requests is that of Deputy Delegate Ramagem (PL-RJ), who asks the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) for detailed information on all flight plans for trips made by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), to the cities of São Paulo and Araraquara (SP), from the 6th to the 8th of January 2023. For the opposition, these data may show an alleged plan to remove the Chief Executive from the scenario of vandalism.

Other requests from different parliamentarians, many of them coinciding, also ask for the images in Annex II of the Ministry of Justice on January 8, 2023, in addition to the security plan of the Institutional Security Office (GSI) to defend the Planalto, in addition to the so-called Plan Shield. The latter is very important because it defines how the Planalto Palace should be defended. If it is compared to what happened on the day of the acts of vandalism, it may show possible incompetence or leniency on the part of the government.

Also included are requests to have the list of guests in hotels in Brasilia on the eve of the invasions and of elderly people and children arrested, as well as the procedures adopted by the STF.

“I believe that this set of essential information will be able to help the CPMI in the January 8 investigations. It is the function of the committee to identify the individualization of conduct by all those involved”, said Deputy André Fernandes (PL-CE), author of the CPMI request for four approved applications.
