Apple announced this Tuesday (12) that software developers who use the App Store will be able to distribute applications to users in the European Union directly from their websites in the spring of the northern hemisphere (autumn in Brazil).

The news comes in the wake of changes required by the block’s new rules, which force Apple to open its ecosystem.

The EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which came into force last week, requires Apple to offer alternative app stores on iPhones and allow developers to opt out of its payment system, which charges fees of up to 30%.

“We’re offering more flexibility for developers distributing apps in the European Union, including introducing a new way to distribute apps directly from the developer’s website,” Apple said.

“Apple will provide authorized developers with access to APIs [interfaces de programação de aplicativos] that facilitate the distribution of your applications from the internet, integration with system functionalities, backup and restoration of user applications and much more,” said the company.

Another change allows developers who create alternative app stores to offer a catalog composed exclusively of the store owner’s own apps.

Developers can choose how to offer promotions, discounts, and other offers within their own app by directing users to complete a transaction on their website, rather than using Apple’s model.

Apple’s changes come amid ongoing criticism from rivals that its compliance efforts are insufficient. Violations of the DMA can cost companies fines of up to 10% of their global turnover.
