Anielle Franco wants to expand MEC’s ​​affirmative actions – 01/26/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, met with the head of the Education Ministry, Camilo Santana, to present a package of proposals for expanding affirmative action in universities and federal institutes in Brazil.

The meeting took place this Thursday afternoon (26), in Brasília. Among the ideas presented by Anielle is the use of data from the Quota Law —integrating information from postgraduate studies, higher education institutions and the selection system, such as Enem and Sisu— to evaluate the results and effects of the program.

This would include the creation of an inter-ministerial management committee, with representatives from both ministries, which would integrate, produce and monitor data.

In addition, the minister defends the expansion of scholarships in the scope of affirmative actions and student assistance policies, such as assistance with transportation, food, housing, purchase of books and materials.

“The joint work between the Ministry of Racial Equality and the Ministry of Education is essential for us to be able to advance in affirmative action policies, which have transformed Brazil and are the greatest reparation policy in the country’s history”, says Anielle Franco.

And he goes on: “We want to expand the access of black people to educational institutions and improve the law to guarantee conditions for entry and permanence in these spaces.”

During the meeting, it was also proposed to include affirmative actions as a mandatory criterion in the four-year evaluation of graduate programs carried out by Capes (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel).

Anielle also defended the recreation of the Committee for Monitoring and Evaluation of Vacancy Reserves in Federal Institutions of Higher Education and High School Technical Education through a joint action between the ministries and Funai (National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples).

In addition to the ministers, the secretary of Continuing Education, Youth and Adult Literacy, Diversity and Inclusion, Zara Figueiredo, the secretary of Basic Education, Kátia Schweickardt, and the secretary of Articulation with Education Systems, Mauricio Holanda Maia, were present.
