Ana Marcela Cunha, 31, Olympic water marathon champion at the Tokyo Games, won this Monday (17) the bronze medal in the 5 km event at the World Aquatics Championships, in the city of Fukuoka, Japan.
Champion of the race in 2019 and 2022, the Brazilian completed the dispute with a time of 59min33sec. The gold went to the German Leoni Beck and the silver to the Dutch Sharon Van Rouwendaal.
“This medal is worth a gold for me, I wasn’t even supposed to be here. And I just have a lot to be thankful for”, Ana Marcela after taking the podium.
The also Brazilian Viviane Junglubut, 27, was in sixth place.
Last Friday (14), Ana Marcela Cunha almost guaranteed her participation in the Paris Games in the 10 km dispute, but completed the distance in fifth position, in a very tight finish between her, the American Katie Grimes and the Dutch Sharon van Rouwendaal.
Grimes took bronze in a decision ratified by the referees in the photograph alone. The result guaranteed the American in the next Olympics, since the first three places win the vacancy.
The Worlds in Japanese waters comes just eight months after Ana Marcela recovered from a shoulder injury. And also after she changed coaches. After 10 years working with the Brazilian Fernando Poossenti, the nadorara competed under the command of the Italian Fabrizio Antonelli.
“I’m living a different moment, everyone knows. And I had surgery. Coming back seven, eight months later and competing on an equal footing with these girls is very important. It’s a different moment, of transition, but I really believe in what I can do,” said the Brazilian.
