The international adviser to the Presidency, Celso Amorim, says in a text written for a recently published book on Hamas that the Palestinian radical group presents “evolution in its international dimension”.
The advisor signs a small presentation in the Brazilian version of the book “Engaging the World – The Construction of Hamas Foreign Policy” (ed. Memo), authored by Daud Abdullah, an Islamic intellectual born on the Caribbean island of Grenada based in the United Kingdom.
According to the publisher, the book is “mandatory reading for everyone interested in understanding Hamas and its battle to break out of the isolation imposed by the Zionist lobby.”
Former chancellor in the first governments of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Amorim says he agrees with the author’s view that Hamas, considered a terrorist by Israel and several countries, can play a “central role in restoring Palestinian rights.”
In the text, Amorim recalls that during his time as chancellor, Brazil recognized Palestine as an independent state.
“During this period, President Lula and I strongly defended a broad and non-discriminatory dialogue between Palestinians. Our representative in Ramallah [capital administrativa da Cisjordânia] visited Gaza and had discussions with Hamas officials,” he writes.
The Brazilian stance at the time generated friction with part of the Jewish community and the Israeli government, as it was considered pro-Palestinian.
