Modification defines period of imprisonment for 6 to 12 years; Project heads to the Senate for approval

Manaus (AM) – Bill No. 3964/2023, authored by federal deputies Amom Mandel (AM), Alex Manente (SP) and Any Ortiz (RS), all from Cidadania, was approved in the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies, this Wednesday ( 06). The proposal seeks to increase the penalties provided for crimes against sexual dignity committed in private private passenger transport, such as Uber, taxis and 99Pop.

The PL proposes a change in two articles of the Penal Code. In cases of rape committed during passenger transportation, the penalty changes from 6 to 10 years in prison to 6 to 12 years.

Another change occurs in the period of imprisonment in cases of committing a lewd act or sexual harassment, in which the sentence would increase from 1 to 5 years, to 2 to 6 years, if the act does not constitute a more serious crime.

For deputy Amom Mandel, the change is a way of acting in the fight against all violence committed against women. “Women are at the mercy of this type of crime at all times and we need to use the legislative instruments available to us to try to guarantee a minimum of justice in these cases.”, he declared.

The project passed through the Constitution and Justice and Citizenship committees, and Social Security, Childhood, Adolescence and Family committees. Now, after approval in plenary, it goes to the Federal Senate.
