First federal deputy to make autism diagnosis public, Amom Mandel calls on federal bodies and civil representatives to debate the obstacles created by the lack of data

Brasilia — In a debut at the Health Commission, this Wednesday (20), federal deputy Amom Mandel (Cidadania-AM) approved a request to hold a public hearing to debate the blackout of data on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) that exists , today, in Brazil.

In the application proposed by the parliamentarian, representatives from the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep), Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Ministry of Health (MS), National Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Conade) will be invited. ) and representatives of non-governmental organizations that work on the subject.

“Today we have no idea about the profile of the population with ASD in the country”, explained the deputy, who was the first parliamentarian within the Chamber of Deputies to make his diagnosis public. For him, it is essential that bodies such as IBGE and Inep reflect the reality of this population so that people with autism are included in society. In addition to contributing to the creation of effective public policies, as guaranteeing these rights depends on continuous efforts coordinated by different sectors.

The hearing will serve to address the need for methodological adjustments in censuses and research to adequately identify the autistic population, it will address the importance of training professionals for inclusive care — mediators — and strategies to overcome obstacles to access to essential services. The challenges faced by the autistic population and the implementation of legal frameworks on the topic will also be discussed with federal institutions.

Mandel defends the need for comprehensive and precise inclusion of the autistic population in Brazilian studies and censuses so that there is a true inclusion of these people in society.

“We don’t have numbers on how this population has grown over the years, where they are, whether they have access to their rights, whether they are studying, whether they are receiving the necessary assistance provided for in federal law so that they have quality in their studies, whether they are having access to health services and so on”,

“We can present projects to try to solve the problems, but how will they be executed if we don’t have the essentials? The data”, pointed out the deputy.
