Amom investigates allegations of human trafficking in São Gabriel da Cachoeira

Parliamentarian continued the investigation of cases and articulates the installation of a CPI

Manaus (AM) – Federal deputy Amom Mandel (Cidadania-AM) was, this Sunday (11), in the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM), to investigate complaints related to human trafficking. Amom has been discussing the agenda in the Chamber of Deputies and is working on the possibility of setting up a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry to investigate possible breaches of international human rights agreements in the Amazon related to the exploitation and trafficking of children and adolescents.

In the municipality, the parliamentarian met with the mayor of the municipality, Clóvis Moreira Saldanha, and with the delegate general of the Civil Police in Amazonas, Bruno Fraga, the director of the PCAM in the interior, delegate Paulo Mavignier, the municipal secretary of health, Adelaide Amorim , as well as soldiers from the Garrison of São Gabriel da Cachoeira.

declared the MP.

According to a survey carried out by the parliamentarian, data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (Sinan), of the Ministry of Health, between 2010 and 2020 the state of Amazonas registered only 60 notifications of human trafficking, however, the Research on Women, children and adolescents for the purpose of sexual exploitation in Brazil (PESTRAF – 2000) pointed out that the North region has the highest concentration of trafficking routes in the country, with around 76 routes, which suggests underreporting of cases.

The most recent case published by the national press pointed to an illegal emigration process of indigenous children and adolescents who were taken from the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira to Turkey. According to information disclosed in the report, at least five young people were invited to participate in an Islamic group, being co-opted by members of the Turkish institution Associação Solidária Humanitária do Amazonas (Asham), which is headquartered in Manaus. The case is being investigated by the competent authorities.

Other demands were also accepted by the parliamentarian, who pointed out that he will continue the articulations in the Chamber of Deputies to guarantee the sending of amendments to São Gabriel and other municipalities in Amazonas that can meet the main needs of the population.
