Amom defends hearing to define territorial and environmental management of indigenous lands

Parliamentarian wants to guarantee the participation of the indigenous population in discussions

Manaus (AM) – A request to hold a public hearing to debate the National Policy for Territorial and Environmental Management of Indigenous Lands (PNGATI) was approved at a session of the Commission for the Environment and Sustainable Development (CMADS), this Wednesday (25). The proposal was authored by the youngest federal deputy in the National Congress, Amom Mandel (Citizenship).

As described in the document, the hearing must be held together with the Commission for the Amazon and Original and Traditional Peoples (CPOVOS). This was one of the topics discussed in a meeting with the Minister of Indigenous Peoples (MPI), Sonia Guajajara, last week. The parliamentarian highlighted the importance of committees working together to strengthen discussions and ensure convergence on the agenda. “It’s interesting for us to combine the two things and prepare proposals that speak the same language in both committees”he highlighted.

In his defense speech for approval, Amom emphasized the need and importance of including all actors involved in the issue when discussing indigenous land management.

“I am the rapporteur of a project that, through a decree from the Federal Government, organizes the management plan for these lands into law. However, I believe that before we take this measure, which can at the same time serve to protect but also restrict legislation, we need to hear all sides, both associations linked to indigenous peoples and all those who want to comment on the case. ”,

explained the parliamentarian.

To ensure plurality in the discussion, the parliamentarian described in the request the invitation to representatives of the Ministries of Environment and Climate Change (MMA); of Indigenous Peoples (MPI) and Agrarian Development (MDA) in the Steering Committee of the National Policy for Territorial and Environmental Management of Indigenous Lands CG-PNGATI.

In addition, also members of the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (FUNAI); the Secretariat of Indigenous Health of the Ministry of Health (SESAI) in the Steering Committee of the National Policy for Territorial and Environmental Management of Indigenous Lands (CG-PNGATI); the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB); of the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) and the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of the Northeast, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo (APOINME).
