Manaus (AM) – The wake of former governor Amazonino Mendes will take place from 5 pm on Thursday (16) until 6 am on Saturday (18) in the hall of the Teatro Amazonas. The definition of the location was made based on negotiations between the Government of Amazonas and the politician’s family.

The ceremony will be open to the public and the entrance to the wake will be on Rua José Clemente, in front of the Rio Mar radio building. On that day, the entire structure of the State will be focused on holding a ceremony worthy of a former head of State, as determined by Governor Wilson Lima (União Brasil).

The structure was designed to serve supporters and the general public who will attend the ceremony at Teatro Amazonas. The Government also set up an organizing team.

According to the press office, the body of former governor Amazonino Mendes should arrive on Thursday (16) in the capital of Amazonas, at no set time.

Trajectory

Born in the municipality of Eirunepé, 1,159 kilometers from the capital of Amazonas, Amazonino Mendes is the son of Francisca Gomes Mendes and Armando de Souza Mendes, and was born on November 16, 1939.

The first part of his school life followed in Eirunepé, until he started studying at the traditional Dom Bosco school, in the capital of Amazonas. In 1969, he graduated in law from the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam).

He married Tarcila Pradro de Negreiros Mendes, with whom he had three children: Armando Mendes, Lívia Mendes and Cristina Mendes.

At the age of 44, Amazonino Mendes began his career in the political space when he was elected mayor of Manaus, with the support of Gilberto Mestrinho. Already in 1987 he became governor of Amazonas. Four years later, he took office as a senator.

In 1994, he was elected for the second term as governor, and re-elected for the third term in 1998. From 2009 to 2013 he was mayor of Manaus, and in 2017 he won the elections against Eduardo Braga (MDB) for the Government of Amazonas.

Last election and disease

Right at the beginning of the last election for the government of Amazonas, polls pointed to Amazonino Mendes as the favorite to win the dispute. However, due to the worsening of the disease, the presence of the politician was decreasing during the election campaign.

In Manaus, Amazonino’s visits to communities and neighborhoods were made by means of an open car, which was called an “electric jeep”. In the interior, the presence of the then candidate was non-existent, since displacements in the interior municipalities are more difficult. In the debates, Amazonino Mendes appeared to have a tired voice, and most of the time, he remained seated for a long time.

At the end of the electoral dispute, Amazonino was in third place, just behind Eduardo Braga (MDB), who was in second, and Wilson Lima (União Brasil), re-elected for another four years.

After the elections, Amazonino was hospitalized with chronic diverticulitis and bronchopneumonia. Diverticulitis is caused by an anatomical deformity, which triggers pockets in the wall of the large intestine. These pouches are called diverticula. When they are inflamed, doctors call them diverticulitis.

The disease can happen both in men under 50 years old and in women between 50 and 70 years old.

The former governor of Amazonas was also diagnosed with bronchopneumonia. The disease is when there is inflammation of the lung by bacteria, fungi and viruses.
