Amazonian students develop robotics project to combat dengue

Manaus (AM) – Private school students develop a robotics project with a focus on sustainability, saving natural resources and combating the dengue mosquito.

The prototype was developed by students from the Laviniense school and supervised by the Amazon startup, EduMaker with a focus on educational robotics, Maker culture and the Steam approach.

With the aim of exploring the use of existing and emerging technologies to maximize the efficiency of the use of natural resources, specifically in services such as plant irrigation, combining digital innovation and sustainability through educational robotics, high school students at Colégio Laviniense developed a prototype of a plant watering can with Arduino.

The project was guided and supervised by the Amazon startup, EduMaker, focusing on educational robotics, maker culture, technological innovation and the Steam approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, Humanities and environmental awareness).

Created by the team of students, the EcoBuilders (ecological builders) which aims, among other advantages, to optimize the consumption of natural resources, such as water and contribute to environmental sustainability, the idea was developed and presented during the 2nd edition of Amazon Stem Adventures (ASAD), carried out by the Academia Stem project at the Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Universidade do Estado do Amazonas (EST/UEA) on April 4th and 5th, at the Stem Lab headquarters, EST/UEA.

According to the founder of EduMaker, professor Jhony Abreu, the team designed an automated irrigation system using the Arduino microcontroller, promoting programming learning and awareness about the importance of ecological and sustainable preservation. “It’s how we can use available technologies in an innovative way to optimize the consumption of natural resources, such as water, and contribute to environmental sustainability.

Furthermore, our intention is to always value technology as an instrument to stimulate innovation, creativity, logical reasoning, the exchange of knowledge and teamwork, essential fundamentals presented in our program”, explains Jhony.

The prototype, in addition to better managing the use of water, also aims to eliminate the need for the famous “little dishes” that serve to collect excess water from plant pots, which cause the famous “breeding grounds” for larvae of Aedes aegypti, the mosquito. dengue, thus combating the spread of the disease.

Leading the project coordination, the startup’s content coordinator, Wallanf Souza, says that this is the second time that EduMaker had an idea selected for an event of this size, which aimed to encourage the development of solutions in the areas of sustainability, industry 4.0 and innovation.

“The ideas were developed by a team of high school students aged between 16 and 17. And without a doubt, participations like this enrich the participants’ CVs in every way, both academically and professionally. And the fact that they are involved in the development of an idea that can become a product will greatly contribute to the future of the students”, points out the coordinator.

The founder of EduMaker Jhony Abreu congratulates the initiative of the Stem Academy of the Superior School of Technology of the State University of Amazonas (EST/UEA) and highlights that the proposal, in addition to encouraging the development of skills with a focus on technology, 3D modeling, robotics , 3D printing and programming, mainly sought to solve a problem faced by today’s society, within the respective categories.

“The event offered an environment that encouraged the exchange of knowledge, teamwork, through collaboration and integration between students, teachers, researchers and multidisciplinary professionals, resulting in the development of solutions. This was the first time we participated in ASAD and the experience was extremely important and positive for students and teachers”, concludes Jhony.

The startup EduMaker (robotics program that offers pedagogical projects related to educational robotics and Maker culture) was born in 2020. Today, more than 25 schools have already been served with the projects in the capital of Amazonas and more than three and a half thousand students have had access to its method of learning

An event aimed at high school students to develop skills and knowledge about critical issues that affect the world today and to imagine innovative solutions by learning in practice 3D Modeling, notions of Programming and Robotics, Digital Manufacturing, teamwork, among others.
