Manaus (AM) — The swimming para-athlete from the Industrial Social Service (SESI Amazonas), from the Workers’ Club, Samuel Felix, 14 years old, was one of those called up for the First Phase of the Paralympic School Camping 2024. The activities will take place on the 28th of this month to the 4th February at the Paralympic Training Center, in São Paulo. The announcement was made this Thursday (11), by the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB), through its Sports Development directorate.
Samuel has been swimming at SESI Clube do Trabalhador since he was 10 years old, for health reasons, as he has Poland syndrome, a rare deformity that affects the chest region, characterized by the underdevelopment or absence of the pectoral muscle on one side of the body, and in some cases, causing syndactyly in the hands. It is detected mainly on the right side of the body and has a higher incidence in male patients, which is the case of the SESI athlete.
Competitions became part of his life approximately a year ago, encouraged by his current teacher, Clemilson da Mota, who realized his potential and encouraged him to participate in competitions.
“I was surprised and happy to be called up to Camping, it is something important for my development as an athlete, even more so after knowing that it is not so easy to be selected”,
he said.
In 2023 he participated in competitions in Brasília, where he won three gold medals, and São Paulo, where he won a bronze medal in the 50 meters and a silver medal in the 400 meters, among other competitions in which he participated in Manaus.
According to his mother, Izonete Lima, since discovering her son’s illness, she started looking for professionals to guide them, even going to the orthopedist who recommended him to practice swimming, as being the ideal sport for his physical and mental development. your son.
“His father and I are very happy, especially because we do everything we can to ensure he is always training, swimming and developing,”
says the mother.
The project has been carried out by CPB since 2018 and aims to provide young athletes, aged between 12 and 17, selected from the School Paralympics, their first contact with the routine of a high-performance athlete.
According to the CPB, 152 athletes from 10 sports and from 22 states and the DF will be brought together (exceptions are Acre, Alagoas, Bahia and Piauí): athletics (31), badminton (16), wheelchair basketball ( 7), bocce (12), football for people with cerebral palsy (16), weightlifting (10), swimming (30), table tennis (12), wheelchair tennis (6) and sitting volleyball (12). In addition to them, 26 coaches and assistants will also participate in the activities.
During their period in the capital of São Paulo, athletes will undergo training, tests and evaluations, as well as attend lectures. CPB will pay all costs for accommodation, food, uniform and transportation for participants.
Camping athletes, in addition to carrying out all the activities proposed by CPB and confederation coaches, are responsible for participating in regional and/or national competitions in their sports throughout the year.
