Amazonian delegation competes in the 2023 School Paralympics in Brasilia

Around 1,800 school-age para-athletes from all over Brazil will participate in the competitions

Federal District (DF) – The delegation of paralympic athletes from Amazonas is on Brazilian soil for the last stage of the regional selections of the 2023 School Paralympics, in the Federal District. The phase, which has 11 participating states, is the last before the great National Phase, which takes place in São Paulo, at the end of November. Of the 24 para-athletes on the team, 14 are from the state education network.

Disputes in the three available modalities begin this Thursday (31) and end on Friday (1st). In athletics, bowls and swimming, students will need the best technical indexes to advance to the national final. This year, the School Paralympics will receive approximately 1,800 para-athletes of school age, coming from all 27 federative units in the country. This is the largest number of competitors in the championship’s history.

“We have the biggest delegation in our history, proof that our para-athletes are evolving, getting involved and wanting more and more to compete and live the sport”,

highlighted the professor of the State Department of Education and School Sports and leader of the Amazonian delegation, Joaquim Filho.

This year, selection for the School Paralympics at the national stage took place through the 1st edition of the School Paralympics of Amazonas (Parajea’s), a specific competition for this purpose. The sporting event, organized by the Department of Education, was a pioneer in promoting sports and including disabled athletes, as it provided an exclusive window of competition for competitors. On the occasion, more than 100 para-athletes participated in the selections.

Preparations

Preparations for the start of the competition are in full swing among the athletes in the delegation. Between Tuesday (29) and this Wednesday (30), training sessions are planned with part of the athletics team, in addition to finalizing the necessary medical classifications for the dispute.

“It is my first time traveling. Here I will compete in running and long jump. I want to compete, do well in my first experience away from home”,

shared 12-year-old Wellington Souza. A track and field athlete, Wellington is a student at the Lucinda Felix de Azevedo State School, in Japiim, in the South Zone of Manaus.

The official opening ceremony of this edition of the School Paralympics takes place this Wednesday afternoon (30), organized by the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB).
