Manaus (AM) — The Federal Government announced, this Tuesday (12), investments for the construction of 100 new campuses of the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology (IFs) and consolidation of existing units. Amazonas will receive two new federal institutes, in the municipalities of Manicoré and Santo Antônio do Içá.

The declaration took place during a ceremony held in the Noble Hall of the Palácio do Planalto, with the presence of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and ministers Camilo Santana (Education) and Rui Costa (Civil House).

The total investment of R$3.9 billion, through the New PAC, will be directed to works, with R$2.5 billion allocated to the creation of new campuses and R$1.4 billion to the consolidation of existing units, covering the construction of cafeterias, gyms, libraries, classrooms and the acquisition of equipment.

The expansion aims not only to increase the supply of places in professional and technological education (EPT) but also to create opportunities for young people and adults, especially the most vulnerable. Furthermore, the construction of new campuses in municipalities has a positive impact on the construction sector, generating employment and income, and promoting local and regional development when the new schools are in operation.

The FIs expansion program marks the significant resumption of investments in the creation of new units almost 10 years after the last structured expansion of the Federal Network. This milestone celebrates one of the most successful educational policies in the field of professional education, which brought quality public education to locations furthest from large centers and state capitals.

With regard to geographic distribution, the Northeast leads with 38 new campuses, followed by the Southeast with 27, South with 13, North with 12, and Central-West with 10. São Paulo is the most benefited state, with 12 new campuses, followed by Minas Gerais and Bahia with eight municipalities each. Pernambuco, Ceará and Rio de Janeiro have six, while Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Pará will have five new campuses each.

The Federal Institute of Amazonas (IFAM) currently has 15 campuses, three in Manaus (Center, East Zone and Industrial District), and in the municipalities of Coari, Lábrea, Maués, Manacapuru, Parintins, Presidente Figueiredo, São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Tabatinga , Humaitá, Eirunepé, Itacoatiara and Tefé.

The announcement represents a historic milestone in Brazilian education, referring to the creation of 38 Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology in 2008. Since then, Brazil has gone from 140 technical schools to 782 units in the Federal Network, accounting for 702 FI campuses, with more than 1.5 million enrollments.

With the addition of 100 new campuses, the Federal Network will reach 782 units, consolidating its position as one of the most comprehensive networks offering technical, higher education and postgraduate courses.
