A year after British journalist Dom Phillips was murdered in the Amazon while working on a book about preserving the Amazon rainforest, a group of journalists now aim to finish the project, his family and former colleagues said on Wednesday.
The book “How to Save the Amazon: Ask the People Who Know” will be published by Manilla Press, which is owned by Bonnier Books, subject to fundraising for complete the remaining work.
Phillips — a freelance journalist who has written for The Guardian, The Washington Post and other outlets — was only halfway through the book when he was killed alongside indigenist Bruno Pereira near Brazil’s border with Peru. The Federal Police said the murders were planned by the alleged leader of a local gang because Pereira posed a threat to their illegal fishing operation.
Among the writers who will help finalize the work are Jon Lee Anderson, who writes for The New Yorker magazine, Tom Phillips and Jonathan Watts, who work for The Guardian, and Andrew Fishman, president of The Intercept Brasil, in addition to writers Brazilians.
They will use notes and transcripts of interviews conducted by Dom Phillips and conduct their own research trips to the Amazon region to complete the remaining chapters.
A team of other journalists who also have experience covering Amazon-related issues will fact-check and review draft chapters, Watts said.
“Dom was killed because of this book,” he said. “The least we can do is finish the task to which he devoted the last part of his life. He may be gone, but he will not be silenced.”
Four people were charged with double homicide and concealment of corpses.
