Created in the 70s, in the United States, breaking is an urban dance style that has been gaining many fans. With hip-hop pillars, fast and impressive movements to the sound of a beat that involves not only the dancers, but also the audience, breaking is a dispute where dance is the only weapon.
Since then, the modality has been growing and in Amapá it is no different. The amapaenses Wallyson Amorim, known as b.boy Snoop, and Erick Françoa, known as b.boy Françoa, are among those who make breaking their philosophy of life. They will be participating in one of the biggest events in the world of the modality: the Red Bull BC One, created in 2004.
In the Brazilian edition, the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Belém and Brasília were holding the regional selections in a knockout format, consecrating four winners, two of each category (female and male) to dispute the final in the capital of São Paulo, on the day July, 22.
Among the eight people from Amapá who will be at the event, b.boy France, The 28-year-old, who was already champion of the sport in Amapa in 2022, is participating for the third time in Red Bull BC One Brasil and says that preparation is being intense to achieve a good result.
“The first time I participated was in 2018, the second in Belém and the third will be in São Paulo. The preparation is intense, every day we are training, because the level there is very high and we need to do our best, eat right and sleep well to perform well”said the athlete.
To stamp your way to the national selection of the competition, France had to stand out among the more than 150 competitors at the regional selective, in Belém. “It was insane, as more than 150 competitors were there. I had a chance to make it to the top 16 and then I got to the top 8. I had a chance to make it to the semifinals, but it didn’t work out. The other day we had a group event and we won.”said.
Another person from Amapá who will be present at Red Bull BC One Brasil is b.boy Snoop, aged 27. He, who has participated in the competition three times, says he is training hard, as the event is a way to promote competitors.
“I had the opportunity to participate in 2015, in Salvador, and I reached the top 8. In 2017, I reached the final, in Amapá. In 2022, I participated in the top 16 in São Paulo. The preparation is being intense, because it is a big, international event, and a showcase for us. We need to arrive prepared, because everyone has the same goal, which is to win, but to represent Amapá well”.
In December 2020, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officialized the entry of Breaking as an Olympic modality at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The initiative aims to bring a younger audience to the competition.
As an Olympic modality, breaking is opening more doors for those who survive from the art. According to Françoa, this made the modality more visible in Amapá and the world, giving more opportunities to b.boys and b.girls.
“I think that after it became an Olympic sport, [o breaking] had more visibility. I think we have to take advantage of it and make the most of it. These trips encourage us a lot and Amapá has high-level b.boys and I think the investment is right”he said.
“Amapá has always been a reference, however it may not seem like it, but we have good b.boys and b.girls representing the state, but there are few opportunities to leave here. Amapá has always been present in these competitions and has always had good results, but it is a little more difficult to leave here, but when we have the opportunity we embrace it with all our energies”, completed Snoop.
The athletes managed to travel to São Paulo through the State Secretariat for Sports and Leisure (Sedel), but they need financial help to pay for accommodation, food and transportation during the time they are in the competition. “We got the tickets, but we need help with accommodation, food and transportation to be able to focus and stay calm in the competition. We are in need of that support.”said Snoop.
