Amapá wins more than 100 medals at the Paralympic Connection, in Goiânia – News of Brazil

Between the 21st and 23rd of June, the capital of Goiás (Goiânia) hosted the Paralympic Connection, an event organized by the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB) with disputes in five modalities (athletics, swimming, bocce, archery and shooting). in three simultaneous competitions: Intercentros, Military Paralympics and University Paralympics.
The sporting event was attended by 255 para-athletes from the cities of Mato Grosso do Sul, Piauí, Goiás, Amapá, Acre and Tocantins, in addition to the Federal District. The delegation from Amapa participated with 33 athletes and won 102 medals, as explained by the coordinator of the Brazilian Paralympic Reference Center Macapá, Marlon Gomes.
“It is a work that has been done at the Paralympic Center. It’s not college X athletes there, it’s the Amapá team. All train together, some of the same class, but they compete not as competitors, but as friends. With this result, we had this expressive amount of medals”he said.
In all, 12 para-athletes from Amapa participated in the Intercentros and 21 para-athletes in the University Paralympics. One of the highlights of the competition was Yndiraima da Cunha, from Amapá, who won the gold medal in the shot put, discus and javelin throws in the F54 class (wheelchair user).
She said the sport helped her return to school months after she was accidentally shot by her older brother when she was 12. The athlete was discovered by coach Marlon Gomes, coordinator of the CPB Reference Center in Macapá, Amapá at the age of 15. He was visiting the shelter for children with disabilities where she lived, to let a student blind when he met her and invited her to become an athlete.
In addition to participating in national competitions, Yndiraima was also engaged in promoting sports and defending the rights of people with disabilities. In 2013, she participated in the founding of the Santanense Sports Association for Persons with Disabilities, also in Amapá. Later this entity merged with others and became the Federation of Paradesports of Amapá, of which Yndiraima was president and today is under the responsibility of the athlete Wanna Brito, one of the summons for the World Championship of the modality, to be disputed from 8 on July 17 in Paris, France.
Training in law should allow her to continue supporting athletes with disabilities. “I want to transform the lives of more people. I am part of the State Council for Persons with Disabilities. I know that, after graduating, I will be able to help the athletes even more. I’m going to graduate, get my Brazilian Bar Association card and stay close to sports. My life, my best friends, everything is connected to sport.”said Yndiraima.
Wanna Brito, from Amapa, also participated in the competition and is now waiting to travel to Paris for the World Cup, which takes place between July 8th and 17th. According to Marlon, expectations are the best possible.
“We are waiting for the Paralympic Committee to send her ticket. The team is in Belém and on the 2nd [de julho] embarks for Paris to represent our Brazil. In addition, Wanna will have a present, because the 12th is her birthday and she will certainly bring a medal to Amapá”he said.
People who are interested in getting to know the Brazilian Paralympic Reference Center Macapá and/or participating in training can go to the athletics track at the Federal University of Amapá on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 3 pm to 5 pm. Anyone with a visual, intellectual or physical disability will undergo an evaluation and may be part of the team.
