Manaus (AM) — Scientists Marcus Vinícius Guimarães de Lacerda and Adele Schwartz Benzaken, from Fiocruz Amazônia, had their names removed from the list of recipients of the 2021 National Order of Scientific Merit in the Bolsonaro government, received, this Wednesday (12), a medal with honor from the President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, in Brasília, during a meeting of the National Council of Science and Technology.
Researchers, professors, authorities and representatives of entities that made relevant contributions to national scientific and technological development were awarded the National Order of Scientific Merit.
Lacerda was the first scientist in the world to point out the inefficiency of chloroquine in the treatment of covid-19. The substance was the ‘cure’ indication of former President Bolsonaro and his followers.
Considered non grata for defending the treatment and control of HIV AIDS for the entire population, including trans men, Adele Benzaken also had her name removed from the list. The two were on the list of recipients of the 2019 medal, which Bolsonaro withdrew and provoked a collective resignation.
