‘Altivez’ by Ana Moser under pressure surprises assistants – 07/11/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

Assistants of the Minister of Sport, Ana Moser, have been surprised by the way in which the head of the portfolio has dealt with speculation that she may lose her position to the centrão. Shaken by the possibility, they have been encouraged by the former athlete herself not to give up and to continue the work of expanding access to the sport in the country.

According to reports made to the column, Moser has not been downcast, but rather strong and haughty.

People close to the minister look to the sport itself for an explanation for her behavior: an assistant recalls that she was once a high-performance athlete and, therefore, knows how to “enter the court” willing to win the game even under boos from the opposing crowd.

The analogy with volleyball, the sport in which Moser made a career, even appears in the advice that has been given to her. Recently, the minister was encouraged to deal with the threat against her ministry in the same way as she faced the selection of Cuba, in reference to one of the greatest rivalries in the history of the modality.

Proof that Moser has ignored the pressure, the assistants also point out, would be at the meeting held with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) this Tuesday (11). The minister arrived at the Planalto Palace more focused on discussing the possibility of Brazil hosting the women’s soccer World Cup in 2027 than on dealing with the possible dismissal.

The meeting with the president had already been requested for a few weeks – the minister did not want to leave for Australia next Monday (17), where she will honor the Brazilian team, without first understanding what the country’s commitment will be in the campaign to become host of the tournament.

According to participants at the meeting, the PT member avoided talking about the centrão’s demand for Moser’s position. He also stated that the minister has a lot of work ahead of her and will need time to take Brazilian sport to the level desired by her administration.

Finally, Lula instructed the former athlete to present the country’s candidacy, on behalf of the Brazilian government, during her trip to Australia.

As shown to Sheet, the centrão intensified the pressure for Lula to carry out a broader ministerial reform. In addition to Sport, the Ministry of Social Development and Funasa (National Health Foundation) are among the claims.

The thesis that Moser’s management has not been standing out, pointed out as one of the motivations for the ministerial change, is vehemently refuted by people close to the minister. They claim that, if this premise were true, there would not be as much interest in taking over the sport as there is at the moment.
