The rapprochement between former minister Aldo Rebelo, from the PDT, and mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) does not signal an expansion of the range of alliances of the emedebista pre-candidacy, but rather the deepening of the composition with Bolsonarism. This is the assessment that has been shared by allies of federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), who will contest the municipal election against Nunes in October.

Rebelo will take on the position of Secretary of International Relations at São Paulo City Hall, a post that had been held by Marta Suplicy, who is returning to the PT to be Boulos’ deputy. In addition, he will be part of Nunes’ political council and campaign team.

Psolistas claim that, despite having been a member of the PC do B for 40 years and having been a minister in PT governments, Rebelo has approached Bolsonarism via the military in recent years. He participated in events and projects at the institute created by General Eduardo Villas Bôas, former Army commander who has a close connection with former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

More recently, Rebelo was praised by Bolsonarists for an interview with the website Politics 360 in which he contested that the attack on the headquarters of the Three Powers on January 8, 2023 was an attempted coup and compared it to the invasion of the Chamber of Deputies by members of the Movement of Liberation of the Landless (MLST) in 2006, when he was president of the house.

Bolsonaro’s right-hand man, Fabio Wajngarten, said he approved Nunes’ choice of Rebelo. “He defends our agendas, such as the right to defense, respect for private property. Aldo brings muscle in a difficult election and anyone who adds strength is welcome.”

The psolists also highlight the support that Rebelo received within the PDT from militants from a group called Nova Resistência, which is inspired by the political scientist Aleksandr Dugin, guru of Russian expansionism, and is classified as extreme right-wing. Carlos Lupi, president of the party, said in 2022 that he would expel them from the party.

In Nunes’ group, Aldo is presented as an asset in the idea of a broad front that the mayor is trying to project.

“It reinforces the sense that the mayor is plural, democratic, and is bringing to the government people who think differently from him, but who have the capacity to deliver in favor of São Paulo. This movement demonstrates that Ricardo Nunes, regardless of ideology, is bringing the best minds to help São Paulo, which is a plural city”, says federal deputy Baleia Rossi (SP), president of the MDB and campaign coordinator for the mayor.
