Alcolumbre leads the pressure to change Ibama’s decision – 05/18/2023 – Panel

Senator Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) told interlocutors that he “will go all the way” to reverse Ibama’s (Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) denial of exploratory studies on oil at the mouth of the Amazon River.

The former president of the Senate, who coordinates the Amapá bench, intends to use his political strength to change the understanding of the institute. He plans to trigger President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) as soon as he returns from his trip to Japan. Until then, he wants to talk to the internal president, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), and the Civil House minister, Rui Costa (PT).

According to assistants, Alcolumbre has the support of the entire state bench, which includes the leader of the government in Congress, Randolfe Rodrigues (without party), to Bolsonarist deputy Silvia Waiãpi (PL). He also claims to have the support of the Ministers of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, and of National Integration, Waldez Goés, in addition to the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).

Alcolumbre says he was especially irritated because Ibama would have taken the decision without listening to the state parliamentarians and did not inform them of the final opinion.

The president of Ibama, Rodrigo Agostinho, said that the only possibility for the decision to be reviewed is if Petrobras resubmits the proposal, with more robust information. He cited as problems the absence of the so-called Environmental Assessment of the Sedimentary Area (AAAS), which the company did not deliver, in addition to the fauna service plan and the communication plan for indigenous peoples, which would be flawed and insufficient.
