Alckmin: Punishment for 8/1 must be for civilian or military – 01/09/2024 – Power

Vice-president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) told Sheet that there was a clear “coup movement” on January 8, 2023, but that democracy emerged strengthened from the episode.

Alckmin points out that there was mistaken action by members of the Armed Forces during the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government. Military personnel, according to the deputy, were contaminated by politics.

“It is unacceptable. The Armed Forces could never have allowed [manifestantes] to arrive[em] close [dos quartéis]. There was a mistaken, distorted vision in the past government, induced by politics, but that was also quickly rejected.”

The vice president also demands punishment for the invaders and those who financed or incited the attacks. “It could be civilian, it could be military, public servant, private, it doesn’t matter.”

January 8th

I went to mass, at the São Miguel Paulista cathedral, in the east of São Paulo, for the inauguration of the new bishop. When the invasion occurred, I was inside the church. In the end, I received a note from security saying: look, it looks like there was an invasion in Brasília. As I was in the middle of the mass and I also thought it was a bit of an exaggeration on the part of the security guard, I stayed until the end. When I left, I realized the gravity of the situation and returned to Brasília, later that night.

coup movement

There was a clearly coup movement. This already existed, it was just a matter of checking what people were saying in front of the squares, in front of the barracks. In my city, people were camped in front of the battalion, in an Army area, defending the coup. It’s unbelievable. But I didn’t think it would get that far.

Military

The Armed Forces could never have allowed it to come close [dos quartéis]. There was a mistaken, distorted vision in the past government, induced by politics, but which was also quickly rejected. And the replacement of the Army commander [Júlio César de Arruda, em 21 de janeiro de 2023] was necessary and relevant. His stance was already inadequate in the previous government, during the government transition. What we heard at that time was that his appointment would not have been prudent.

Attacks and electronic voting machines

It is an attack on democracy, a very serious thing. It’s not just the destruction of public property, the destruction of buildings and furniture, it’s much more than that. You are violating the Brazilian Constitution. A patriot is someone who defends the Constitution, the law, democracy, the results of the election. Whoever did this is a scammer, it’s a crime. It’s interesting, because the [ex-]president [Jair] Bolsonaro was elected by electronic ballot box. A son was elected councilor using the electronic ballot box. The other son was elected federal deputy using the electronic ballot box. The other son was elected senator using the electronic ballot box. It’s unbelievable.

Response to attacks

The reaction was quick, firm and united the three Powers. The Executive, the Judiciary, the Legislature. The response was very positive. I would say that democracy comes out very sad, but it comes out stronger.

Punishment of invaders

It’s a chapter that hasn’t even begun yet. Proper punishment is important because the process is serious. You realize that many people who participated, somewhat out of ignorance, were sometimes used. This is an investigative process that needs to be done. She [a pena] is not excessive. The other side is missing. It is not possible to punish just those who were inside. Who incited all this? Who encouraged it? Who distributed fake news? Who financed it? It could be civilian, it could be military, public servant, private, it doesn’t matter. The logic of the Republic is that the law is for everyone. In fact, I say more: the greater the responsibility, the authority, the power, the greater the compliance with the law must be.

Jair Bolsonaro

I have no doubt that he has no appreciation for democracy. This is clear and clear. In fact, I even said, when I ran in 2018: I don’t know how someone who doesn’t believe in democracy contests elections. It’s a contradiction. It’s not possible. When I win, it counts. When I lose, it overturns the election.

Strength of Bolsonarism

It’s always good to have several poles. Unanimity does not exist in the democratic process. The logic is that whoever wins rules. Whoever lost monitors. What you shouldn’t have is an uncivilizing attitude, hatred. This is the contradiction, because democracy is civilizing. Now, all over the world you are experiencing a more radicalized political situation, not just in Brazil.

Left and right

I understand that today this left and right thing is more like a sailor’s compass rose, because it’s difficult to explain. I think these issues are minimized. Many of the issues today are common sense, which is proof of political maturity.

Alliance with Lula

It is important to see the origin of things. We were together to redemocratize Brazil. Afterwards, everyone went their own way. Lula went on to create the PT, and I ended up being the seventh signature in the founding of the PSDB, in 1988. We were fellow constituents. We supported President Lula in the first presidential election, in the second round. The PT supported us in São Paulo, when the [Mário] Covas was a candidate for governor. You had a moment now, in the last election, and January 8th is proof of that. Brazilian democracy was at risk. There is a need for Democrats to see the bigger issues and work together. I am very happy to be able to make my contribution. I tried twice to run for president. So I studied national policy issues a lot.

Membership of the PSB

The PSB and PSDB are very close, it is a social democratic vision. I think the PSB has renewed its program and I feel very good about the party. I don’t see it as antagonistic for you to seek economic efficiency, carry out reforms and, on the other hand, have a social concern that will be growing in the world.
