AGU quotes Gayer for talk about Africans he didn’t say

The Attorney General’s Office (AGU) published a note informing that it had called the Attorney General’s Office (PGU) to carry out a study on the appropriate legal measures to the detriment of federal deputy Gustavo Gayer (PL-GO). Deputy Gayer has been accused of racism for statements made on the Três Irmãos Podcast program, last Friday (23), in which he associates the low cognitive capacity of Africans with dictatorships.

In the communiqué, the AGU, after claiming that Gayer would have made “discriminatory statements against Africans”, justifies the request for investigation with a phrase in quotation marks that was not said by the deputy. The phrase “there are monkeys with an IQ of 90 while in Africa the average IQ would be 72”, mentioned by the AGU, appeared a little differently in a comment by the show’s presenter, Rodrigo Barbosa Arantes, in the form of a question: “Did you know that there are monkeys?” with an IQ of 90?”; then someone says something in the studio and he repeats “72 in Africa the IQ”. On social media, the Goiás parliamentarian responded to criticism by saying that his demonstration was taken out of context. “The complete lack of ability on the left to interpret [da] my speech about low IQ being fundamental to create a dictatorship is the perfect proof that I am right”, wrote the congressman in his Twitter profile.

In the video of the program, the deputy stated that the low average IQ in Africa, which appears in some surveys, would be related to factors such as malnutrition, lack of education and the effects of measures by dictatorial governments. The deputy also compares this scenario with Brazil.

“Then you will see in Africa that almost all countries are dictatorships, almost everything there is dictatorship. Democracy does not prosper in Africa because for you to have a democracy you have to have the minimum cognitive capacity to understand between the good and the bad, the right and wrong,” Gayer said.

According to the AGU, the parliamentarian’s statements are “inadmissible in a democratic context that demands full respect for all citizens”. And he added: “the deputy’s statements may also constitute a crime of racism”.

This Wednesday (28), deputy Duda Salabert (PDT-MG) said on her social media that she would call the Ethics Council of the Chamber of Deputies to ask for Gayer’s mandate to be revoked. “The Chamber cannot be a space for racists! He should be arrested on top of losing his mandate,” Salabert wrote.

The deputy’s advisory reported that the parliamentarian judicially questioned deputy Salabert to question at which moment in the video she identifies mention of color or race.
