AGU establishes commission to regulate the Office of the Defense of Democracy

The Advocacy General of the Union (AGU) established the working group that will create the regulation of the National Attorney of the Union for the Defense of Democracy, a new unit of the AGU foreseen in the decree for the restructuring of the institution that comes into force on the 24th of January. . The ordinance with some of the nominations was published in the Official Gazette this Friday (20). The objective of the working group will be to gather collaborations and subsidies for the regulation of the unit.

“The group will provide transparency to the work and the debate it will provide will be fundamental for the improvement and clarification of the purposes of the new Attorney’s Office”, said the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias. The new attorney’s office must adopt measures “against misinformation and in favor of the effectiveness of public policies”, according to the AGU. The body must also act in the “resumption of harmony between the powers”.

Structure

One representative and one alternate from each of the following entities will be invited to participate in the working group: Brazilian Bar Association (OAB); Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters (Abert); National Association of Journalists (ANJ); Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji); Brazilian Press Association (ABI); and the National Federation of Journalists (Fenaj); in addition to nominees from the National Council of Justice (CNJ) and the National Council of the Public Ministry (CNMP).

Lawyers and specialists were also invited to join the group, as well as representatives of the Ministries of Justice and Public Security and of Human Rights and Citizenship, as well as the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic. The WG will be coordinated by the Attorney General of the Union, Marcelo Eugenio Feitosa Almeida, and will also have the participation of two representatives appointed by the Attorney General of the Union, in addition to a member of the General Secretariat of Consultancy.

Academic and scientific community

The following representatives of the academic and scientific community will form the Working Group: Ademar Borges de Sousa Filho, Alaor Carlos Lopes Leite, Daniel Sarmento, Gustavo Henrique Justino de Oliveira, João Gabriel Madeira Pontes, Juraci Lopes Mourão Filho, Leonardo Avritzer, Marcelo Cattoni de Oliveira, Mauro de Azevedo Menezes, Martonio Mont’Alverne Barreto Lima and Marco Aurélio Ruediger.

Upon completion of the work, the AGU will prepare a draft regulation that will be made available on the institution’s portal for public consultation and, subsequently, for evaluation by the Attorney General of the Union.
