AGU asks for blocking of assets of over 40 scammers suspected of participating in attacks – 01/24/2023 – Politics

The AGU (Advocacy-General of the Union), the body responsible for the legal representation of the government, requested in a new action the Federal Court of the Federal District to block the assets of 40 people suspected of invasion and depredation of buildings in Praça dos Três Poderes on the last day 8.

Last Friday (20), Justice authorized the blocking of up to R$ 18.5 million in assets belonging to 52 people and seven companies suspected of sponsoring the acts.

Now, the AGU asks for the inclusion in the blockade of new supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) who were arrested in the act during the attacks on Congress, the Planalto Palace and the Federal Supreme Court. The unavailability of real estate, vehicles, amounts in bank accounts and other assets is requested.

There is not, for now, a request that this lock value be higher. According to the AGU, the amount takes into account the damage estimates presented by the Three Powers.

The AGU informs that the request, which is confidential, states that the suspects “participated in the materialization of acts of invasion and depredation of federal public buildings (…) so much so that in the midst of these acts they were arrested in flagrante delicto as responsible for the acts of vandalism in the premises of the buildings of the three Powers of the Republic and in view of them preventive arrest was decreed”.]

“[Os suspeitos] actively participated in illicit acts which, more than material damage to the federal public property object of this action, resulted in damage to the democratic order itself and to the Brazilian image”, says the agency.

The secrecy of justice is justified because the action contains information related to arrests in flagrante delicto and ongoing investigative measures.

The action, according to the AGU, was prepared based on documents from the Civil Police of the Federal District and the decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF, who decreed the preventive detention of the suspects.

Justice had blocked BRL 6.5 million, on the last 12th, in goods and rights of people, entities and companies that would be involved with the coup attacks. This amount was expanded to R$ 18.5 million.

In the ruling on Friday (20), federal judge Francisco Alexandre Ribeiro stated that the blockades aim to “ensure the compensation of millionaires for property damage caused to the public purse”.

Some of the defendants who had assets blocked would have financed the transport of Bolsonaristas to Brasília.

“The defendants played a decisive role in the factual development that occurred on January 8, 2023 and, therefore, must respond for the damage caused to the federal public property and derived from these acts”, said the AGU in the first request made to Justice to block the assets. .

“The seriousness of the facts practiced and in which the defendants were involved, which, more than harming the federal public property, implied a real threat to the Brazilian democratic regime, requires a swift and effective response”, he added.
