Agro has already advanced over 60% of indigenous territory in Paraná – 04/26/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

A study carried out by the Guarani Yvyrupa Commission, which brings together Guarani communities from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, states that 60% of a land claimed by indigenous peoples in western Paraná is already dominated by agribusiness.

The site is home to Avá-Guarani communities, which, according to the survey, currently have only 1.13% of the Tekoha Guasu Guavirá Indigenous Land. With 24,000 hectares located between the municipalities of Guaíra, Terra Roxa and Altônia in Paraná, the territory was recognized in 2018 by Funai (National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples), but was annulled under the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The advance of activities such as soy and corn cultivation would be such that, in some cases, there are only two meters of distance between the planted area and the indigenous people’s homes.

The territorial restriction imposed on the communities would be directly impacting the exercise of traditional activities and subsistence of the original peoples that inhabit the place. In some cases, entire families have come to depend on the collection of food scraps discarded in the Guaíra municipal dump.

“There are frequent times when Avá-Guarani families go hungry or are on the verge of famine”, says the study by the Guarani Yvyrupa Commission. “It is important to ask, after all, why there are families going hungry in a region where modern agribusiness predominates, the one that promises to feed the world”, he continues.

The Guarani Yvyrupa Commission is still concerned about the effects of the intensive use of pesticides, which would be affecting the surrounding soil and even killing the animals raised by the indigenous people. “At the time when the poisons are sprayed, it is common to find dead animals, especially chickens”, says the study.

Another crop that would be causing concern is eucalyptus. Currently, monoculture would be occupying 680 hectares of indigenous land —an advance considered significant in relation to 2010, when this type of plantation had not yet significantly penetrated the limits of the territory.

The Guarani Yvyrupa Commission also questions the fact that the Brazilian State guarantees the rural sector various types of protection, whether through rural credit or tax incentives, for example, but does not provide the same type of benefit to indigenous people.

“It is not too much to remember that, in addition to being extremely vulnerable to severe climate change, all responsibility for the loss of their plantations in the face of these effects rests exclusively with the Avá-Guarani themselves, who have been losing their agricultural biodiversity without any protection on the part of the State. “, says the study.

The Guarani Yvyrupa Commission has been demanding speed from the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in processes of demarcation of indigenous lands located in the South and Southeast of the country.

According to the entity, more than 70% of the 166 territories of the Guarani people have not yet been recognized or are in a stagnant process of demarcation, which would make the group the least contemplated until then.
