President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke by telephone, this Wednesday afternoon (5), with the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and accepted the invitation to participate in the opening ceremony of the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union. The event is scheduled for the 17th and 18th of this month, in Brussels, Belgium.
Until then, the trip of the Brazilian president had been ruled out, and vice president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) is the one who would represent the country at the meeting, informed Agência Brasil. The summit has not taken place since 2015. According to the Planalto Palace, Sánchez invited Lula to the opening of the Summit Business Forum, alongside him and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
At the forum, new European investments in Latin America should be announced. Spain recently assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This week, Brazil assumed command of Mercosur, formed by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
The president’s participation in the CELAC-European Union Summit comes amid an attempt by the Brazilian government to modify some demands made by the European bloc to approve the Free Trade Agreement with Mercosur.
