New York Times suggests that former president tried to escape justice
Former president Jair Bolsonaro spent two days at the Hungarian Embassy in Brasília, between February 12 and 14 this year, after having his passport seized by the Federal Police. The information was released this Monday (25) by The New York Times.
The North American newspaper suggests that Bolsonaro, the target of criminal investigations, tried to escape justice as the former president cannot be arrested in a foreign embassy that hosted him, because he is legally beyond the reach of national authorities.
“The stay at the embassy suggests that the former president was trying to leverage his friendship with a fellow far-right leader, Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary, in an attempt to escape the Brazilian justice system while facing criminal investigations at home. country”, says the newspaper.
Images
The American newspaper had access to images from the embassy’s security camera, which show that the former president remained there for two days, accompanied by security guards and embassy staff. Ambassador Miklós Halmai also appears at the scene.
The publication analyzed images from the site’s security cameras and satellite images, which show that Bolsonaro arrived on February 12th in the afternoon and left on the afternoon of February 14th.
The images show that the embassy was practically empty, except for some Hungarian diplomats who live there. According to the newspaper, the employees were on vacation because Bolsonaro’s stay was during the Carnival holiday.
According to the report, on February 14, Hungarian diplomats contacted Brazilian employees, who were expected to return to work the following day, advising them to stay at home for the rest of the week.
Defense
The defense of the former president of the Republic confirmed that he spent two days staying at the Hungarian embassy in Brasília “to maintain contacts with authorities from the friendly country”. In a statement, Bolsonaro’s lawyers say he maintains a good relationship with the Hungarian premier, with whom he recently met at President Javier Milei’s inauguration in Buenos Aires.
“In the days when he was staying at the Magyar embassy [húngara], upon invitation, the former Brazilian president spoke with numerous authorities from the friendly country, updating the political scenarios of the two nations. Any other interpretations that go beyond the information provided here constitute an evident fictional work, unrelated to the reality of the facts and are, in practice, another list of fake news”, says Bolsonaro’s defense.
The Hungarian Embassy has not yet commented on the former president’s stay.
Passport
Bolsonaro’s passport was seized by the Federal Police during Operation Tempus Veritatis, launched by the PF on February 8, as ordered by the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes.
The operation was launched after Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp, signed a collaboration agreement with PF investigators.
