the landing of Flamengo at Galeão Airport, in Rio, was marked by protests from the crowd after the 3-1 defeat by Olimpia, a result that eliminated the Libertadores team on Thursday night (10), in Asunción, Paraguay. The Flamengo delegation arrived early this Friday (11) and was faced with about 40 fans irritated by the elimination.
The group surrounded the red-black bus at the exit of the airport and sang “team without shame”, among other protest cries. To enter the vehicle, the players had to be protected by a barrier formed by security, while more excited fans threw cans.
The Military Police were also called in to reinforce security. There was considerable difficulty for the bus to leave the scene and the police used pepper spray to disperse the confusion. Fans even sat on the floor, preventing the movement of the vehicle.
Before arriving in Brazil, the players had already been targets of protest in Paraguay, as Flamengo fans who traveled to watch the match went to the door of the hotel where the delegation was staying. There, they dedicated themselves to uttering curses mainly against President Rodolfo Landim. Among the players, Pedro and David Luiz were the most offended.
Flamengo won the first game of the round of 16 of the Libertadores, against Olímpia, by 1 to 0, in Maracanã, so it needed a draw in Asunción to advance to the quarterfinals. If the classification came, the opponent in the next phase would be rival Fluminense, who eliminated Argentinos Juniors on Tuesday.
The environment in the red-black team has been troubled for a few weeks now, with internal problems arising intense reactions from the fans. Coach Jorge Sampaoli has his work questioned, especially in the relationship with the players.
Tension at the club reached a new level when striker Pedro was assaulted by fitness coach Pablo Fernández after refusing to follow the professional’s orders during the 2-1 victory over Atlético-MG at the end of July.
Fernández was fired and Pedro was punished by the club, being left out of the list for the first game against Olimpia. The striker returned in the 3-0 defeat to Cuiabá, last weekend, in a game in which Sampaoli chose an alternative team, but did not leave the bench in the decisive match this Thursday.
