Acts against Dino in the STF return public to the streets against judicial activism

Thousands of protesters dressed in green and yellow gathered in squares and streets in several capitals this Sunday (10) to protest against the appointment of the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, to the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The presence of right-wing politicians marked these events, which, according to their organizers, symbolized the return on a national scale of public reactions to judicial abuses and the advancement of the left-wing agenda in the country.

The mobilization occurred amid concerns still generated by the STF’s reactions to the acts of January 8, which resulted in more than a thousand arrests without due legal process. In addition to rejecting Flávio Dino’s name to fill the vacancy left by retired minister Rosa Weber, protesters and political leaders involved in the protests also called for the impeachment of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF. .

Eleven months after the last demonstration in Praça dos Três Poderes, Brasília once again gathered citizens with conservative and right-wing flags, along with political and religious leaders. The security scheme in the central area of ​​the capital was reinforced by the Federal District government in a preventive response to the protests. Hundreds of people gathered on a section of the Esplanada dos Ministérios lawn in the morning, expressing their opinions through slogans, banners and posters.

During the event, protesters heard speeches from deputies and senators, retired judge Sebastião Coelho (who told STF ministers that they are the most hated in the country) and the wife and daughters of Cleriston Pereira da Cunha, known as Clezão , who died in prison in November due to health problems, despite appeals for his release coming from the defense, his family and the Public Ministry, addressed to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the STF inquiry. Clezão became a symbol of this stage of the movement against judicial activism.

Parliamentarians such as deputies Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) and Marcel Van Hattem (Novo-RS), together with senators Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE), Jorge Seif (PL-SC) and Magno Malta (PL-ES), expressed support for these agendas in demonstrations and on social media. From the sound car, they emphasized the importance of the population being heard by the senators, who will vote on Dino’s nomination next Wednesday (13), at the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ), where he will be questioned, and in the plenary, where it needs to receive at least 41 votes in favor. The government’s expectation is that Dino will receive 53.

“Let us pray on our knees so that the senators think about the future of this nation”, said Girão. Malta highlighted the desire of STF ministers to take revenge on former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and his voters, bypassing Congress and the laws. Ferreira called for the release of all those arrested on January 8 and criticized Minister Gilmar Mendes, from the Supreme Court, and the Minister of Human Rights, Silvio Almeida. Van Hattem asked for popular support for the opening of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) into the Abuse of Power, filed last week in the Chamber.

“Out with Alexandre de Moraes and not with the communist Dino, who persecutes people and freedoms. The Senate has to say no to him,” said Coelho, who is a lawyer for January 8 prisoners and who also participated in the event on Avenida Paulista.

A lively moment was the presentation of a song created by samba singer Boca Nervosa, specifically against Flávio Dino’s nomination for the STF, with the chorus “Dino, não” being sung by the public.

In Belo Horizonte, Praça da Liberdade brought together hundreds of demonstrators who protested against the possible appointment of the minister to the STF, highlighting the phrase “communist is not Christian”. In Salvador, at Farol da Barra, the public event led by Christian churches expressed concern about the risk of more judicial censorship in the country, a situation similar to that seen in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. There were also demonstrations in the central areas of Porto Alegre, Curitiba and other capitals.
