Actor and youtuber is successful dubbing football controversies – 07/06/2023 – Sport

When Brazil was knocked out by Croatia in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Qatar last December, actor and voice actor Gustavo Machado, 24, found an opportunity.

The Brazilian fans were still trying to understand how Tite’s team missed a victory in the final minutes of extra time before being overcome on penalties, when a video of Neymar arguing with Fred went viral on social networks.

You could see how nervous the number 10 was with the midfielder’s decision to go on the attack at that point in the game, but it took lip reading to actually understand his scolding his teammate. It was there that Gustavo, without even noticing it, found an opening to publicize his work.

“I remember that I saw the discussion live and I understood what he said just by sight. It was easy to read. understand what was said and feel the same frustration I felt”, tells the actor to Sheet. “I confess that I made this video unpretentiously, but it went viral at a bizarre level.”

The stretch is short, just 20 seconds, but the dubbing done by him revealed Neymar’s feeling of frustration at that exact moment.

“Hey, there. There’s no need for you to go up there, dad. There’s no need for you to go up there. Stay here. It’s 1-0, five minutes to go. Will you give an option? Will you give the guys an option to attack? You have to hold the game back here,” says Neymar according to the voice actor’s interpretation.

Since its publication, on December 10, the day after the defeat of the selection, the video has accumulated more than five million views on YouTube alone.

“Since then, I started to focus on this type of content. I understood that I had an audience that wants to know what happens [durante um jogo]. It became another field of dubbing that I work with now”, says Gustavo.

After the scolding of Neymar, the fury of Abel Ferreira, coach of Palmeiras, towards striker Calleri, from São Paulo; the provocations between Marcelo, Fluminense winger, and striker Gabigol, from Flamengo; the irony of striker Hulk, from Atlético-MG, against referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio and his assistants; among other controversial soccer scenes were also targets of the actor’s interpretations.

With services provided for platforms such as Netflix, Globoplay and HBO, the voice actor enjoys the freedom he has to make sports-themed videos. He is the one who chooses the shots, transcribes the lines, edits and dubs.

In general, the work usually takes three to four hours. Among the stages, the one that takes the most time is the search for different angles of a bid to do lip reading, including videos from TV stations and other amateurs, made by fans, in addition to reports by journalists who worked at the events.

“Dubbing is what I do the fastest due to the experience I already have. I spend more time doing lip reading and also researching media outlets to understand exactly what was said during a game.”

Although he is not an expert in lip reading, the technique is part of his job as a voice actor. “I have a responsibility, I don’t make up lines,” he explains.

The professional also says to be more careful when producing videos of bids with foreign athletes or even Brazilians who work abroad. In these cases, in addition to the transcription of the speeches, there is also adaptation work. “As with a dubbed film, I do the ‘Brazilian version’, with words that are more common here.”

A Flamengo fan, Gustavo says he usually receives requests from fans of several teams to create dubs with current and former bids.

It is not new, in fact, that conversations between players, coaches and referees generate curiosity. In the past, lip-reading provocations and discussions in the field has already generated a lot of controversy.

During the 2006 World Cup, in Germany, Fantástico, from TV Globo, created a scene in which three deaf men lip-read what coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said on the field during the first phase matches.

The coach complained at the time that he had his privacy invaded and that the lip reading done by Globo did not faithfully correspond to his words. The complaint yielded an apology during Jornal Nacional, in a note read by presenter Fátima Bernardes.

Parreira’s irritation also had another reason. It was not the first time that his speeches in the field were targets of external interpretations. In the 1994 World Cup, the defunct São Paulo newspaper Notícias Populares published a report based on lip reading of a discussion between coach and striker Müller after the 1-0 victory over the United States in the round of 16.

According to the report, the striker would have shouted: “That way, it won’t be possible to win anything, damn it! It’s all on top of us”, to which the coach would have replied: “Okay. It’s not right. I know what I’m doing “. Muller would have completed, still exalted: “I know it’s all wrong, but it’s just like that, damn it! Fuck it.”

When he complained about the Fantástico show, Parreira insisted on remembering this episode 12 years after it happened. “What Muller said to me was nothing like what was said”, he criticized.

Gustavo Machado, so far, has not faced this type of problem. No player, coach or referee has complained about his work. All that has come to him are requests from the fans. “For me, I would do all Brazilian teams.”
