Activist Rafaela Albergaria was included in the State Program for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, Social Communicators and Environmentalists in Rio de Janeiro, for her complaints about deaths and injuries on the Brazilian rail system.
She maintains the Observatório dos Trens and has been receiving threats for her work. In a meeting of the deliberative council of the program, on Thursday (27), it was decided that it would be part of the protective measure.
The program is composed of state and federal entities, as well as members of civil society.
Rafaela is the cousin of Joana Bonifácio, who died in 2017, whose body was dragged by a train in Rio de Janeiro for about 100 meters and was only removed from the scene after eight hours. The activist launched the observatory in the same year and a book about the episode two years later.
