Abraham Weintraub launches pre-candidacy for mayor of São Paulo

The former Minister of Education in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Abraham Weintraub, announced this Friday (26) that he intends to run for mayor of São Paulo in the October elections. Although he is affiliated with the PMB, he wants to enter the race as a stand-alone candidate, without a party.

Maybe I’ll win, probably I won’t win […] but at least you will go to an election with dignity”, he stated, referring to two of the main names in the race for Palácio dos Bandeirantes.
Weintraub was Minister of Education between 2019 and 2020, but left the position to occupy the executive board of the World Bank. In 2022, he broke with Bolsonaro after he did not find support from his former boss to run for governor of São Paulo. At the time, the then president preferred to launch the then Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), who ended up elected.
Since then, Weintraub has become a voice critical of Bolsonaro. In the 2022 elections, he was a candidate for federal deputy for the PMB, but ended up not being elected.
To the newspaper “O Estado de S.Paulo”, the now pre-candidate said he had no discontent within the party to which he is affiliated. “I have nothing bad to say about PMB, just good words, but the path we will follow will be different”, he said.
If the strategy of asking the Court for a separate candidacy fails, Weintraub said he does not see space for a party like the PMB to embrace his project.
