Abner Teixeira and Beatriz Ferreira advance to the quarterfinals of the Strandja Tournament

Brazilian boxing secured two more representatives in the quarterfinals of the Strandja Tournament, in Sofia, Bulgaria. This Wednesday (22), Abner Teixeira (+92kg) beat the Australian Teremoana Teremoana, while Beatriz Ferreira (60kg) overcame the Chinese Yang Chengyu to advance in the competition. Tatiana Chagas (54kg) and Yuri Reis (63.5kg) also competed on the day, but lost.

Abner Teixeira won his second victory at the Strandja Tournament and maintained his long unbeaten streak, which has lasted since 2021. Against Teremoana Teremoana, the Brazilian had a tough start to the fight, but took off at the end to emerge victorious. Abner won the first round in the opinion of four judges and won the second for three judges. In the last part, he increased the intensity and knew how to exploit the opponent’s fatigue to confirm the triumph.

That way, Abner Teixeira secured himself in the quarterfinals of the category over 92 kg. He is one victory away from securing a podium spot in the competition. In the next phase, the Olympic medalist will face Frenchman Dini Djamili, in a fight scheduled to take place this Thursday afternoon (23).

Beatriz Ferreira made her debut in the competition and won in a dominant way. The Olympic runner-up prevailed over the Chinese Yang Chengyu from the start and won by unanimous decision. Guaranteed in the quarterfinals, she will now face the Indian Simranjit Kaur Baatth, who passed the Australian Scanlon Danielle in her debut. The fight is scheduled to take place on the morning of Friday (24). It is worth mentioning that Bia was champion of the last edition that participated in the Strandja Tournament, in 2021.

Other Brazilians

Other Brazilians in action this Wednesday lost in the Round of 16. Yuri Reis (63.5kg) was coming off a victory in his debut, but lost to the German David Gkevorkian by split decision, after a balanced fight. Tatiana Chagas (51kg) lost to Bulgarian Stanimira Petrova, world champion in 2014, in her debut. The home athlete had an advantage in all rounds and won by unanimous decision of the judges.

Brazil has six athletes still alive in the Strandja Tournament, which is one of the oldest and most traditional in international boxing. In addition to Abner Teixeira and Beatriz Ferreira, Caroline Almeida (50kg) and Jucielen Cerqueira (57kg) are in the quarterfinals, while Luiz Oliveira (57kg) and Keno Marley Machado (92kg) are in the round of 16.
