A sprinter from Amazonas conquers vice-leadership in the Under-18 Athletics Championship

The U-18 South American Championship is considered one of the most important competitions on the annual calendar.

Manaus (AM) – The sprinter from Amazonas considered to be the fastest youngster in his category in Amazonas, Hyago Melo, 17 years old, made history at the U-18 South American Athletics Championship in São Paulo.

Coming from expressive results in athletics, the athlete, who is part of the Projeto Sport e Lazer na Capital e Interior (Pelci), joined the Brazilian delegation and won second place in the 4×100 relay event with a time of 42.27 seconds.

“When we have athletes winning titles in Olympic sports, we know that our work is on the right track. With the support of the Government of Amazonas, the athlete Hyago has conquered his space in the sport and the investments are so that more athletes are always at the highest level”, highlighted Jorge Oliveira, director-president of the Fundação Amazonas de Alto Rendimento (Faar).

Contributing to the athlete’s technical improvement, coach Reina Abreu highlighted that this achievement represents the fruit of hard work.

“This achievement was planned by work carried out on a daily basis, and today we are reaping the rewards”, commented the Pelci teacher.

The athlete stated that it was a relief to discover that he was runner-up in the South American Championship.

“It was a relief when the race ended and we found out that we were runners-up in the South American Championship. This title only added to my career, and today I am considered the fastest young man in Amazonas. This is a moment of happiness and I’m sure I’m close to fulfilling my dream of becoming Pan American and World champion”, highlighted Hyago Melo.

Edition

The 2022 edition of the U-18 South American Championship is considered one of the most important competitions on the annual calendar and had the participation of 217 athletes from 10 Latin American countries, such as Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. The event was organized by the Brazilian Athletics Confederation (CBAt) and took place at the Olympic Training and Research Center Stadium, in Vila Clementino, in São Paulo.

next challenges

For this year, Hyago Melo, follows the intense training routine in search of more titles. The athlete will compete in the Loterias Caixa de Atletismo Sub-20 Brazilian Championship, which will take place in April, and the Pan American Championship in the Sub-20 category, to be held in June in Bogotá, Colombia.
