Doubles of Sophia Kelmer and Israel Strtoh were champions in Poland
This Friday (29) was full of Brazilian podiums – two of them with gold medals – on the last day of the Fa20 Paralympic Table Tennis Open, in Wladyslawowo (Poland). Current number five in the world, Sophia Kelmer from Rio, who had already won silver in the individual competition on Thursday (28), won gold today in the doubles of the WD 14 class, alongside Poland’s Katarzyna Marszal. The two defeated in the final the partnership between Japanese Yuri Tomono and Romanian Gabriela Constantin, by 3 sets to 0, partials of 11/8, 11/8 and 11/9.

“I am very honored to wear the Brazilian team’s shirt and play in another international championship, this time with the title. Taking this title to Brazil is very gratifying. I played alongside a Polish girl from Class 6, and the experience of playing at her house was also really cool. I think I can see how much I’m growing, how much I’m improving in all aspects and I just have to thank everyone who was rooting for me”, said Kelmer, in a statement to the Brazilian Table Tennis Confederation (CBTM ).
Another champion pair was that of Brazilian Israel Stroh with Spaniard Jordi Morales, who won the MD14 class final against the partnership of Belgian Ben Ashok Despineux and Norwegian Krizander Magnussen. The pairs had already faced each other in the group stage, when Despineux and Magnussen came out on top. In the gold dispute, it was the Brazil-Spain partnership that emerged victorious with the gold medal. The triumph was obtained with splits of 10/12, 8/11, 11/7, 11/7 and 11/8.
Also this Friday (29), there was bronze between Guilherme Costa and Iranildo Espíndola in the MD4 class doubles contest. The two were beaten in the semifinals by the pair of Spaniard Daniel Rodríguez and Japanese Masanori Uno, by 3 sets to 0 (11/5, 11/6 and 11/5).
The Paralympic Open counts points in the qualifying ranking for the Paris Games. CBTM expects to announce the list of classifieds (individual disputes) next week. The list of classifieds in the doubles will be published at the end of April.
In total, six athletes have already secured their Paralympic berth in Paris by winning gold at the Parapan American Games in Santiago (Chile), last year. They are: Thiago Gomes, Danielle Rauen, Marliane Santos, Cláudio Massad, Paulo Salmin and Luiz Manara.
