One year after the coup attacks on January 8, 89% disapprove of the invasions and 6% say they approve of what happened in the episode. Still, 4% did not know or did not want to answer.

This is what research carried out by Quaest, released this Sunday (7), says. 2,012 interviews were carried out with Brazilians aged 16 or over between December 14th and 18th. The margin of error corresponds to 2.2 percentage points, plus or minus.

In the first survey carried out by the company, 94% disapproved of the coup invasion, 4% approved and 2% did not know or did not want to respond.

The level remains high in all regions of Brazil, in all reindeer and educational levels. Among Lula (PT) voters, 94% said they disapproved of the attacks, and 4% approved. Among those who voted for Jair Bolsonaro (PL), 85% said they were against the episode, and 11% were in favor.

Quaest also asked whether the former president had any type of influence on January 8, and 47% responded yes, compared to 43% who said they saw no influence from the retired Army captain. 10% did not know or did not want to answer,

It is in the Northeast region that most believe in Bolsonaro’s influence in the attacks — 57% see influence, compared to 33% who do not see any links from the former president at the event in Brasília. Southerners are those who least see the former president’s involvement, with 52% believing there is no influence, compared to 39% who say they see his involvement in the attacks.

Furthermore, 51% believe that the participants in the invasion are radicals and do not represent Bolsonaro’s voters, and 37% believe that the coup plotters represent the former president’s voters. 13% did not know or did not want to answer.

The former president is being investigated for alleged involvement in the coup attacks, whether as an intellectual mentor or as an instigator of what happened in Brasília. In addition to the STF (Supreme Federal Court), which included him in investigations into the acts, he is also the target of investigation by the Federal Police.

On other fronts, the CPI on January 8 approved a final report calling for the indictment of the former president and 60 other people, including five former ministers. The document suggests four crimes: criminal association, political violence, violent abolition of the democratic rule of law and coup d’état.

The report calls Bolsonaro the “great intellectual author” of the attacks and says he would be the biggest beneficiary of a coup. “The then president has direct responsibility, as a moral mentor, for a large part of the attacks perpetrated on all republican figures who imposed any type of obstacle to his coup endeavor.”
