Result of poll with readers of People’s Gazette, which was on air between November 27th and 30th, points out that 52% of participants believe that the opposition will have the strength to block the nomination of the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, to the Federal Supreme Court (STF). In total, 1,932 readers responded: 1,005 think that the opposition will be successful in trying to prevent Dino from taking up a seat on the STF and 927 believe that it will not.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) appointed the Minister of Justice on Monday (27) to fill the vacancy opened almost two months ago with the retirement of Minister Rosa Weber. To reach the Supreme Court, Dino must be examined and approved by the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) and receive the support of at least 41 senators in the plenary.
Opposition parliamentarians are trying to articulate a sufficient number of votes to prevent approval in the Senate. The leader of the opposition in the Senate, Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ), pointed out that the appointment of the Minister of Justice to the Court is “strictly political”. Senator Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), also leader of the opposition, said that “the appointment of Flávio Dino to the Federal Supreme Court is an act of adding fuel to the fire.”
Despite the opposition’s actions, the expectation is that the name will be approved. Shortly after beginning efforts to obtain the support of parliamentarians, this Thursday (29), the Minister of Justice stated that he already has enough votes to have the nomination to the STF approved by the senators in the hearing on December 13th.
