The information comes from the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana. In addition, another 900,000 people who have debts with Fies will also be able to renegotiate the balance (see conditions below). The measure will apply to debts from contracts signed by students until the end of 2017 and with unpaid debts until June 30, 2023. “It was a demand from students and those who had already graduated and who were in default with Fies. This law will benefit 1.2 million students who are still studying, or have already graduated, which means something around R$54 billion in debt that they will be able to pay off under very favorable conditions”, explained the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana . Rules Renegotiation is valid for: ▶️ Beneficiaries with debts due and unpaid for more than 90 days, on June 30, 2023: will be able to pay in up to 150 installments, with a 100% reduction in interest and fines, will have a discount on the total amount charges and up to 12% of the principal amount in the case of payment in cash. ▶️ Beneficiaries with debts due and unpaid for more than 360 days, on June 30, 2023, who are not registered with CadÚnico and have not received Emergency Aid in 2021: will have a discount of 77% of the consolidated value of the debt through full settlement of the outstanding balance. According to the minister, defaults on FIes have increased in recent years, and the government decided to facilitate debt repayment. “There are many reasons: people who completed the course and couldn’t get a job and went into debt, pandemic, economic crisis […] We will have greater control over who manages these contracts. We are creating a program to have greater control over this financing,” she explained.
